The Sheltered Pavements of Taipei Streets

Whilst Hong Kong has plenty of air-conditioned shopping malls and connecting walkways, Taipei city has built in covered pavements under their buildings. This isn't a revelation by any means, but a god-send for even our short treks from our hotel to the Ximen MRT station.

I haven't yet noticed as wide an implementation of these covered pavements in any other city, but they made such a difference to shade us and other pedestrians from the blazing sun during the hot ten days that we were in Taipei.

Building over pavements obviously allow extra floorspace in the properties above, but in shopping meccas like Ximending, they provide more wall space to display merchandise - useful for retailers for when the general public are sheltering from the rays.
